Prolific pamphleteer Bouton (1799-1878), a Congregational clergyman and state historian of New Hampshire, inscribes the printed front wrapper of this copy: "Mrs. E. Long / with kind regards of the / Author." Mrs. Enoch long was the sister-in-law of explorer Stephen H. Long; husband Enoch, a resident of Alton, Illinois and noted eary settler in his own right, headed a small militia unit whose job it was to protect abolitionist Elijah Lovejoy from the "angry mob." They failed and Lovejoy was shot dead. An interesting copy with unusual associations. First edition. SABIN 6963. .
