They also believed that the time was auspicious for the production by Americans of a National Work - so broad, comprehensive and genuinely great that it would everywhere be recognized as the product of native genius and be acknowledged worthy of the great people for whom it was prepared". In producing the enclopedia the editors were "assisted by more than two thousand of the most eminent scholars and authorities in America and Europe". Clear, comprehensive and handsomely presented.
