HARDCOVER, handsomely bound in half calf and marbled boards, spine gilt. Lacks a plate, else a very good, handsome copy. ~ First Italian edition. Translated from the French by Selvaggi Canturani. Incomplete, contains frontispiece and 9 folding plates. Louis Jobert's (1637-1719) acclaimed manual, "La science des medailles, pour l'instruction de ceux qui commencent à s'appliquer à la connoissance des medaillea antiques & modernes", first appeared in Paris in 1692/3 (Lucas). It went through several editions, and was translated into the main European languages. Lipsius p. 202. Cf. Brunet III, 549 (listing the French editions of 1715 & 1739). The handsome frontispiece is by now well known for its view of two collectors in their coin cabinet, the spaciousness and luxury of which attests to the craze for medal collecting.
