Description: New York, Harper & Bros., 1864, First Edition. Book Disbound , Very Good, COMPLETE AND ORIGINAL ISSUE, NOT A REPRINT. In very good condition-- no tears except to spine where disbound, fading only to two pages printing Dickens' story. Superb cover illustration of General Grant crossing the Cumberland Mountains on January 7, 1864 on foot in apparently freezing weather with story inside. This issue features Chapters. 7 and 8 of "A White Band and a Black Thumb" by Charles Dickens (pp. 118-119). Fine cover illustration of "General Grant Crossing the Cumberland Mountains, January 7, 1864" from Knoxville to Louiville with brief story on p. 118. Also, a spectacular, two-page spread of illustrations in excellent condition, "Valentine's Day 1864" with graphic depictions of the customs and Union sentiments of the day, including Union soldiers writing letters at camp, likely Valentine wishes to their loved ones, as well as criticism of the South. Of special note is a Valentine being delivered by Satan to Jeff Davis, who closely resembles his messenger in looks. The Union is clearly associated with the angelic, as in one vignette showing a chubby cherub in a Union uniform delivering a letter (with a patriotic salute) to a smiling female loved one. There are two Valentine stories as well: "St. Valentine's Day" and "Becky Vane's Valentine." Also, full-page illustration by the masterful A.R. Waud of the "Military Ball of the Third Guard," showing soldiers dancing with their wives during a respite from the war (as stated in the accompanying article." Also, "Scenes in and Around Richland Jail, Columbia, S.C." and "Railroad Accident in Kentucky."
