Born in Hartford, Connecticut, James Thrall Soby (1906-1979) studied at Williams College, and developed a keen eye for modern art, stimulated, in part, by visits to the Wadsworth Athenaeum, which was an improbable venue for the avant-garde art under the directorship of Everitt "Chick" Austin. A patron of Ben Shahn and the Surrealists, Soby joined the Museum of Modern Art's acquisitions committee in 1940, where he later served as Director of the Department of Painting and Sculpture (1943-45), and Chairman for many years. A long-standing Trustee of the museum (1942-79), the institution benefited from his largesse, as this exhibition of gifts demonstrates. The author of several MoMA catalogues, Soby's collection was quite expansive and included notable works by Picasso, Miro, de Chirico (especially), Matta, Moore, Shahn, Klee, Balthus, Bacon, etc. Very Good.
