Edges rubbed and spine leather a bit crackly-looking. Early owner's inscription inside front cover. Margins tanned and pages have a brittle feel. Scattered notes in text (appears to be from a very early owner). Most text unmarked, and binding is tight. Volume 13 (or volume 4 of the New Series) of THE CHAUTAUQUAN, a monthly educational magazine for the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle. Contains articles on a wide variety of topics, including a recurring section called the "Woman's Council Table." This particular volume contains a piece by Louisiana writer Grace King, titled "The Chevalier Alain de Triton," plus an article by Katharine Lee Bates (who wrote "America the Beautiful") titled "Woman as Scholar." The majority of the contributing writers are women. .
