Interesting French pirate edition of French translation of : The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman (or Tristram Shandy) by Laurence Sterne. It was published in nine volumes, the first two appearing in 1759, and seven others following over the next seven years. It purports to be a biography of the eponymous character. Its style is marked by digression, double entendre, and graphic devices. The publication of Tristram Shandy made Sterne famous in London and on the continent. He was delighted by the attention, famously saying I wrote not [to] be fed but to be famous. He spent part of each year in London, being fêted as new volumes appeared.
