A bicentennial publication, this book is a history of the town of St. Andrews, New Brunswick. The town is now best known as a resort destination, but it was established in the 1780s by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution, who ended up settling here. The book really concentrates on the pioneer families who lived in St. Andrew in the 19th century, and the architecture they built. Tons of illustrations – many old portraits of the original settlers & their families, and also lots of photos of some of the original heritage houses. Usually these are connected – the story of a family & what they did, along with a photo of their homestead, or themselves. Many of the old and beautiful Victorian buildings are still standing, and I think that one of the purposes of the book is to highlight the huge amount of history still in St. Andrews. The book is NOT a full-scale local history – there’s not much info on churches, schools, local businesses, etc… There is an 1800s map, which shows the original surveyed layout of the town, etc… But, still a fascinating and informative book which would be of great use for anyone interested in the history of New Brunswick or Maritime genealogy.
