Presidential Address. Uttar Pradesh Minorities and Backward Classes Convention
Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Minorities and Backward Classes Convention. 1968. Soft cover. Book, [ii], 14pp. 8vo/21.5cm. Printed wrappers, light soil. VG. A rationally worded call to action against Hindu right-wing oppression of the former Untouchables caste and other minorities. The speaker makes a number of proposals including the boycott of elections, the creation of smaller states and the creation of some minority states such as the Mool Bharati Pradesh, the Pachmi Pradesh, Dakshani Prabesh and Purbii Pradesh. The meeting was held at Lucknow on 12-13 Oct 1968. B. Sham or as he is better known B. Shyam Sunder (1908-1975) was a prominent Dalit leader often considered second only to Dr. Ambedkar within the Dalit movement. A member of his Memorial society which still exists recently claimed that he had been a roommate of Chou En Lai and Ho Chi Minh in Paris at some point in his life and was also a member of the Hyderabad and Karnataka Assemblies. The Memorial society published the Bhoodevtaon Ka Manifesto in 2005. He is also said to have addressed the United Nations in 1948 on the condition of the Dalits. His book, They Burn: the 160,000, 000 Dalits of India, was published by the Dalit Sahitya Akademi in 1987. He is said to have organized the Bharatiya Bhim Sem, a "self-protection force", presumably for the Dalits. A very interesting piece of ephemera by a Dalit leader who seems relatively unknown to the outside world. Scarce. VG.
