This is an early Chinese / American crime lord mystery story set in San Francisco's Chinatown similar to the Fu Manchu mysteries. The author, an Englishman, settled in California in 1888 and became acquaintances with Ambrose Bierce upon Bierce's relocation to Santa Cruz in 1894. "This does not set forth to be that destable thing, a book with a purpose; but if it should incidentally draw attention to the terrible conditions of life of the slave girls in Chinatown, and if any amelioration of those conditions should ensue, I shall feel that I have not written in vain." This book contains a series of short stories, including: The Illumination of Lee Moy, The Shadow of Quong Lung, A Civil Death in Chinatown, The ings of Lee Toy and, The Seats of Judgment..
