The preface is by J. Bretland Farmer. The author later went on to publish the famous English Rock Garden, still a standard work, as well as a number of books on plant collecting. ""Few writers have been so nimble with epithets and imagery to describe plants, or conveyed such infectious enthusiasm"". (Hugh Johnson)
