Title: The Diary of Jonathan Pearson. Edited with an Introduction and Notes by Harold C. Martin
Description: Schenectady, Union College Press, 2004. First printing (first edition). Hardcover. New in dust jacket. 2 volumes. 1,486 pages. Printed at the Stinehour Press. After graduation from Union College in 1835, and a year spent teaching in Philadelphia, Jonathan Pearson (1813-1887) devoted his life to the College's service, as professor of chemistry and botany, treasurer, and librarian. He also published several still-useful volumes on the early history of Schenectady and Albany. Pearson began a diary in 1828, at fourteen, and continued it, with occasional gaps, until 1875. This forty-seven year span, probably unequaled by any other American collegiate diary, coincides with a critical period for the United States and for higher education as exemplified by Union College. In addition to serving as a rich source of information about daily life and conflicts at the College, the diary records in colorful detail several trips beyond Schenectady: most notably one to St. John's Island in Canada and another by canal boat on the Erie Canal to Niagara. .
