Small 8vo, pp. 213. ¶ Orwell's first published book, published by Gollancz in 1933, when he was thirty years old. Our offering is a copy of the first "Uniform Edition", with the type re-set, and published September, 1949, in a printing of 3,000 copies. It has the correct code number W.791 and the top edge is stained purplish red. Bound in publisher's pale green cloth. (See Fenwick, "George Orwell A Bibliography", A.1f). Slight spine slant. Cloth shows light wear and soiling, with small purplish stain to edge of front board. Rubber stamps on endpapers indicate this copy came from the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (IODE), who supplied books to the Deer Lodge Military Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, for reading by disabled veterans. One blank page at rear of book quite crumpled at bottom. Portion of dust jacket flap pasted down on to inside rear board. Overall, still a good, to good plus, copy.
