ORWELL, GEORGE NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR
Toronto, S. J. Reginald Saunders 1949, hb. 8vo, pp. 314. ¶ First published in 1949 by Secker & Warburg, London, in an edition of 25,575 copies. The first American edition was by Harcourt, Brace and Company, NYC, in the same year. The first Canadian edition was also published in 1949, by S. J. Saunders, Toronto, but in a smaller edition than either the UK or U.S. editions. It was bound in grey cloth with red title lettering to the front board and to the spine. Fenwick's bibliography (viz, A.12d) does not make any mention of the black dot, to the rear board, so often seen on the Saunders edition, although it is noted that Saunders and the Book-of-the Month Club, which issued their copy in 1949, shared the cost of production, printing 15,000 copies in total. Our copy has the black dot. The binding is worn and noticeably rubbed at the bottom of the boards. Hinges stressed. Contents clean. Overall, a decent reading copy. No dust jacket.
