Complete two volume set bound in original leather. 12mo, Printed for J. and R. Tonson at al. ¶ Otway (1652-1685) as an English dramatist of the Restoration period. Volume I contains four plays each with its own dated title page: "The Soldier's Fortune" (pp. 116 - a comedy), "Alcibiades" (pp. 72 - the author's first play), and "The Orphan" (pp. 93 - a tragic masterpiece, written in blank verse); each play preceded by a copper-engraved frontispiece, and with a three-page printers' catalogue at end. Volume II contains five plays each with its own dated title page: "Don Carlos, Prince of Spain" (pp.82 - a rhymed tragedy), "Caius Marius" pp. 96), "Titus and Berenice" (pp. 108 - an original comedy), and "Venice Preserved" (pp. 96 - Otway's second masterpiece, much admired by Dryden). Each play in this volume also preceded by a full-page copper-engraved frontispiece, but no catalogue at end. Each of the two volumes contains the armorial bookplate of Charles, Lord Maynard. The binding of both volumes is quite worn, with small loss to the spine ends. The front board of volume II is detached (but present). Foxing typical for age present in contents, but it is not untoward. A few very small worm holes to last few pages of second volume.
