Pavy (1829-1911) devoted many years to the study of diabetes. (See G&M 3936). This is a unique association copy, as on the front pastedown is a presentation plate stating: "Presented to Howard College Library by Samuel Sterling Sherman, LL.D. Howard's First President 1842-52". Small "withdrawn" stamp to bookplate, "H.C. Library" stamp to front free endpaper, unused Howard College Library loan slip tacked to rear pastedown. Two pages of publisher's ads at end of book. Howard College (now Samford University) opened its doors in January, 1842, in Marion, Alabama. It was relocated to Birmingham in 1887. In 1965, it was renamed Samford College, to acknowledge the benefactions of Frank Park Samford. Samuel Sterling Sherman (1815-1914) was its first president.
