In original printer's boards, repaired with tape & new endpapers. 12mo, pp. [12], 243. ¶ The title and the text are in Latin. A rough translation of the title page is as follows: Francisci Ortmann / of the Presbyterian Society of Jesus / A Book / about the Life and costly Death / of the Venerable Priest J. Caspari Cratz / from the Town of Goltzham of the German Territory of (indecipherable) / and of his Friends / the Venerable Batholomas, Emmanuel of Abrea / and Vincentii de Cunei / from the Society of the Priests for Jesus / Taken from the Letters / of this same Venerable Martyr / to his friends etc. There are two old (19th century?) stamps on the title page of religious librairies. Otherwise, the contents are remarkably clean. Overall, a good plus copy of this scarce item. Johann Kaspar Cratz (Sept. 14 or 15, 1698 to Dec. 1, 1737) was born in Germany and educated at Jesuit schools. In 1726 he travelled as a companion priest with a noble family, and also by himself to Italy, Spain, Portugal, France and Belgium, where he acquired a facility in other languages. He then signed on with the Dutch East India Company for six years as an officer, and was posted to Batavia (Java). After his posting there, he travelled to Macao to preach, and eventually made his way to Tonking (Ke-cho) where, along with Batholomas, Emmanual, and Vincente, he was beheaded. This is the first edition of his biography. Offered for US$ 200.00 by: Greenfield Books - Book number: 030456 See more books from our catalog: Biography | |||
