This set, which eventually numbered over 140 individual titles, was started early in the Second World War as a morale-booster for the English people. Many famous English writers and experts (Vita Sackville-West, George Orwell, Edith Sitwell, John Betjeman, Rebecca West, Dylan Thomas, Graham Greene etc.) contributed their efforts. The set proved so popular that many individual numbers were reprinted and eventually a second edition was issued. Curiously, all titles contained only 48 pages.
