PARIS, M.D. THE STOMACH IN ITS MORBID STATES [bound together with] A TREATISE ON DIET Philadelphia, A. Waldie 1839 and 1841, hb. Nicely bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards. 8vo, pp. 194, 220. Both titles are from "Dunglison's American Medical Library". The Parker title contains an "analytical index". ¶ This is the first American edition of the Parker book, the title of which continues: "With a Practical Enquiry into the Nature and Treatment of Diseases of that Organ, and into the influence they exercise upon the Origin, Progress, and termination of Diseases of the Liver, Heart, Lungs, and Brain." The title of the Paris book continues: "With a View to establish, on Practical Grounds, A System of Rules for the Prevention and Cure of the Diseases incident to a disordered state of the Digestive Functions." Parker was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society. However, neither this title, nor Parker is mentioned in Garrison & Morton; although there is a reference to Paris (G&M 2073) as providing the first description of arsenic cancer. There was, apparently, an earlier British edition of the Parker title, published the previous year by Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Co. in London. Parker is perhaps better known for his work on syphilis ("Modern Treatment of Syphilitic Diseases") which went through seven editions between 1839 and 1860. Paris was a Fellow of the Royal Society, and a Member of the Royal College of Physicians. The Paris title is a later printing. It was first published in London and Philadelphia in 1826. It was then reprinted a number of times. This book shows some rubbing to the edges, and light scuffing. There is a bit of spotting to the endpapers, and throughout the text block, but nothing untoward. Overall, the book is in nice, tight, condition and presents itself handsomely.
