Description: 0. Niort, photographer Bourgoin ; Sainte-Blandine (near Niort) , Pierre Bouin abbé ( manuscript's author) , 13 januari 1867. Photography album , in-4°, 28 x 24 cm, contains 51 original photographs (albumine prints), mounted on 26 board leaves. Bound in half cloth, partially disbound, spine missing, interior fine. Kept in a purposely made red cloth box. The album consists of 4 introductary photographs and 47 photographs which reproduce the actual manuscript. The first photo '' Avertissement'' contains a text with the history and the purpose of the publication. The second photo is a compilation of the 17 portraits of the participants at the project. Prominently figuring are the photographer and the author-writer . This must be the first fac-simile of a Western illuminated manuscript where both the photographer and the scribe are portrayed. The manuscript is a translation in the French dialect of the Poitevin region ( South-west France) of a papal decree (Bulle) promulgating the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary, made in Rome on december 8th 1854 . Early photographic reproduction of the neo-gothic manuscript ( 19th c. imitation of the 14th-15th c. style). ( The first known photographic reproduction was made by Camille Sylvi in 1860 of the Sforza manuscript). Very rare. We found only three listings in the OCLC catalogue ( Paris, London and Vancouver ). .
