Text in French. Livre en français. The author Pierre Louis Bouvier was a native of Geneva but studied in Paris (under M. Vestier). When young he temporarily resided in Hamburg but he ended his career as director of the ''Ecole de la Figure'' in Geneva. His manual was allmost immediately translated into English and German and was based on his 40 years experience as a painter. He aimed to write a book which would enable a young painter to develop his art without any other help than this publication. (J.J. Rigaud ,, Des Beaux-Arts à Genève , pp.77). .
