Description: Amsterodami, Apud Lodovicum Elzevirium, 1640, small in-8°, 11.5 x 6 cm, engraved titlepage (C. C. Duysent fec.), 196 pp, contemporary leather, gilt decorated spine, marbled endpapers, red edges, with handwritten ex-libris (Lud. Franc. Muguetus Parisinus 1698). Traiano Boccalini's (1556-1613) "Pietra del paragone" (publ. only in 1615) was translated into Latin by the Finn Ernest Johan Creutz, 1619-1684, in 1640 - and into English as "The politicke touchstone" by Henry, earl of Monmonth, in 1670. The titlepage shows Apollo dispensing justice - the theme of "Ragguagli di Parnasso" (Reports from Parnassus), the first work by this eminent political (and anti-Spanish) satirist.
