Description: Antwerpiæ (Antwerpen), apud Henricum Aertssium, 1622, engraved title + 76 engraved plates by Boetius à Bolswert, 18th century full red morocco binding, covers with double gilt fillet, smooth gilt back, all edges gilt, headcap slightly damaged, title page a bit soiled and with little inkspots, the name Boetius à Bolswert erased from title. Jean Bourgeois .S.J. (Maubeuge, formerly in the Southern Netherlands, 1572 - 1653), led the jesuit college at Valenciennes and subsequently at Saint-Omer. This finely engraved suite, with Latin commentaries engraved underneath the pictures served the didactical purposes of the jesuits in their drive to bring the catholic religion to the young and uneducated. This is the first edition of the plates which were quickly re-edited with a French and a Dutch text, apparently the plates were also edited with a separate text (see Funck).n°7030. .
