The author, a former officer in the 'old'dutch colonial indonesian army, K.N.I.L., describes in tog. 21 stories daily life and troubles of the common [dutch] colonial soldier: the low social status, boredom during barrack-life, heavy drinking, harsh dicipline, life in military prisons as Ngawi and Pondjol, relations with women, but also praises their fierceness and gallantry during armed conflicts, in short: the archetype of the common colonial soldier is painted colourfully.
