First two volumes published by IPV, volumes 3 & 4 published by Hans Huber. 6 pounds 2.0 ounces = 2.8 kg. 8.8 x 5.9 x 5.4 inches = 22 x 14.8 x 13.5cm. Inscribed on the front flyleaf of volume one "Herrn Prof. John Dollard // zur freundlichen Erinnerung. // Angyal Andras". A neat, if unusual, association. Both Dollard and Angyal were notable contributors to 20th century clinical psychology, Dollard (1900-1980) received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1931, after which he spent a year in psychoanalytic training with Hanns Sachs in Berlin. In 1932 he began working The Institute of Human Relations at Yale, where he remained the rest of his career. Dollard managed to meld anthropology, sociology, learning theory, and psychoanalysis into a multifaceted explanation of human behavior. His books Caste and Class in a Southern Town and Frustration and Aggression are both classics. The Hungarian-born Angyal (1902-1960) emigrated to the USA in 1932 after earning his MD from the University of Turin. His first post was in the Anthropology Department at Yale, which is presumably when he gave Dollard the first volume of Ferenczi's selected papers. From 1937 to 1945 Angyal was Director of Research at Worcester State Hospital. He developed a holistic psychology that became widely influential after publication of his 1941 book Foundations for a Science of Personality. Both that book and the posthumous 1965 Neurosis and Treatment are still read. Complete sets are uncommon. Binding: HB.
