Title: The Rifle Brigade Landing at Algoa Bay 1852.
Description: Limited Edition, No. 469 of 500. Heritage Fine Art 1976. Framed. Image size 370mm wide x 260mm high, framed size 570mm x 460mm Attractive copy in excellent frame but does show mild spotting. Sold framed (not recommended for overseas sale due to freight costs). This illustrates the Rifle Brigade landing in Algoa Bay on March 30th from where they moved to King Williams Town as needed reinforcements during the last stages of the 8th Frontier War under George Cathcart who had earlier succeeded Sir Harry Smith that year. As the painting shows, 1 RB was landed ashore by means of surf boats and the help of the native population (who were referred to at that time as 'Fingoes'). HM Steamship Megaera is clearly visible in the bay with smoke coming from her funnel. After landing, 1 RB encamped on the hill above Port Elizabeth where the Battalion prepared to move 'up country' which it did on 2 April. In early 1853 the Eighth Frontier War came to an end. I RB remained in Cape Colony until the end of the year eventually arriving back in England in January 1854.
