"The Reichspostdampfer Feldmarschall was one of 20 ships built by the Deutsche Ost-Afrika Linie (DOAL) between 1890 and 1914 for service under the contract concluded with the German Empire in May 1890 for the establishment and operation of a regular German mail steamer service with East Africa. On 24 June 1903, the Feldmarschall embarked on her maiden voyage on the "Hamburg-Round-Africa" route and remained in this service until 1914. On this service, the Reichspost steamships departing from Hamburg alternately first sailed through the Atlantic to Cape Town and then returned via East Africa, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, or they first sailed the traditional route through the Mediterranean and the return journey took them around the Cape of Good Hope through the Atlantic to Hamburg".
