Starts with a brief introductory on the earlier history of the Cape leading up to the establishment of Graaff Reinet in 1786 from which date the Eastern Province is considered to have had official existence. Cory deals with subsequent events in the large drostdy that this covered in detail, including unrest in and around Graaff Reinet, Slagter's Nek, and The Battle Of Grahamstown.
