Bradburne was shot by guerillas in Zimbabwe in the last year of the bush war, 1979. He was warden of Mutemwa Leprosy Settlement near Mutoko until his death. He is a candidate for canonisation by the Roman Catholic Church. A service is held in Bradburne's memory at Mutemwa every year, drawing as many as 25,000 people each time. In 2009 a Mass commemorating the 30th anniversary of his death was held at Westminster Cathedral. As a poet he left behind some 6,000 poems.
