Layard was gold medallist of the royal geographical society. A scarce and valuable work on the region which includes Iran and Iraq. Unfortunately this is only volume one of the two volume set. 490 pp. with colour lithographed fronts, one other plate and two folding maps. In beautiful full navy calf prize-binding, with gilt crest on front cover, gilt decorations on spine, marbled eps; presentation certificate inside covers. Generally very nice condition. with ex--libris of 1899. 2 excellent double maps ultimately. 2-3 spots in the first 4 pages. Engraving to color in front. Some illustrations. Very Good/Very Good.
