La Place's study of Kant's nebular hypothesis, now known as the Kant-La Place theory, which greatly stimulated scientific thought throughout the 19th century. The second part contains an excellent resumé of the history of astronomy to the close of the 18th century. The text is preceded by a laudatory address in honour of La Place delivered at the French Royal Academy of Sciences on 15th June 1829 by the Secretary, Baron Fourier. Brunet III, 834.
