It is a new copy. The Italians were the first portolano chart makers; they were soon followed by the Catalans and the Majoricans of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The discoveries of the Portuguese and the Spanish, which occurred at the end of the Middle Ages and heralded the modern age of sea exploration, encouraged the development of new navigational aids and improved charts. The Portuguese brought the sea going nations of Europe their seaman’s guides and portolano charts. These pilot books of west European waters were used from the fourteenth century on; they contained no charts, only sailing directions. They are called rutters from the French word routier, meaning chart or map. These rutters were all copied from others by hand, with amendments added by the new maker. At the end of the sixteenth century the first seaman’s guide appeared – it combined sailing instructions and charts of coastal areas. These printed guides gave the mariner all the information he needed to navigate along Europe’s coasts. As New/As New. Offered for EUR 239.00 = appr.
