CHATELAIN Nouvelle Carte De L'Asie Avec Des Tables Alphabetiques Pour Trouver Sans Peine Les Etats Des Principaux Princes De Cette Partie Du Monde
Amsterdam, 1705. 23 x 18.5 Inches, 43 x 58 Cm. Nouvelle carte de l’Asie, avec des tables alphabetiques pour trouver sans peine les etats des principaux princes de cette partie du monde : une table des villes principales et quelques remarques pour l’intelligence de l’histoire de l’Asie. Uncolored. Detailed map of Asia, based upon Guillaume De L'Isle's map of 1700. Includes interesting treatment of Japan with Terra Yeco and Terra de la Comagnie shown, along with other myth and conjecture along the Northeast coastline of Asia. Richly annotated throughout and with excellent regional detail. Includes side text panels. From volume 6 of Chatelain's monumental 7 volume Atlas Historique. 1:18, 500, 000. This handsome chart of Asia is a wonderful example of Chatelain's elegant maps. This impressive map extends as far south as Java and includes the northern most tip of New Zealand. Although Korea is correctly shown as a peninsula, rather than an island, Japan has assumed a bizarre shape and is connected to ?Terre d Yeco? at its northern border. Two tables, listing the names of the various states along with their principal cities, border the map. Sovereignty is also listed, as are the principal rivers throughout Asia. This fine map is a wonderful example from Chatelain's important text. By combining a wealth of information and geographical observation, with delicate engraving and an uncomplicated composition, this elegant map is a superb example from the golden age of French mapmaking. Excellent.
