Red cloth gilt, F. xii+454+x+459pp, b/w frontis, engraved title, 37 b/w plates, fore edges a little foxed, otherwise a fine copy in bright cloth. A facsimile of the 'Author's Favourite Edition' originally published by Chapman & Hall. Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ On the verso of the half title it states : This is an exact facsimilie in every detail of text and illustration, excepting on the title pages, of the last edition of his works published under the eye of Charles Dickens, and described by him as 'this is the best edition of my books.' The Style of Binding being also copied from the original. Dickens' novel in which a shipping firm owner, who is frustrated at the lack of a son to follow him in his footsteps rejects his daughter's love before eventually becoming reconciled with her before his death.
