Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ Faraday's papers occupy pp 74 - 96 of N° XXIII & pp 283 - 285 of N° XXIV [ 24 ], in them he is the first to describe the conversion of electrical & magnetic forces into mechanical movement - the basis of the electro magnetic motor. Two plates accompany his papers, one showing his aparatus. The book also contains a paper by E W A Hay 'On An Ancient Monument Of Sculpture In Stone representing The Theban Sphinx, Which was Recently Discovered At Colchester In Essex' which is illustrated with 4 fine plates. Also a separately paginated 12pp paper, with its own title page - 'An Answer To The Accusations And Aspersions Of Mr Richard Phillips FRS Which Were Published In A Letter Addressed To Mr Parkes in The Twenty Second Number Of The Journal Of Science, Literature And The Arts'
