According to an old inscription on title page: "Book of Psalms in Amoy Colloquial. Printed under the supervision of Rev. J. Howard Van Doren, missionary of American Reformed Church, Amoy". Van Doren worked as a missionary in Amoy from 1864-73, the American Reformed Church Mission having been established there in 1842. Amoy or Xiamen, a coastal city in southeastern Fujian province of China, was one of the five Chinese treaty ports opened by the Treaty of Nanjing (1842) and became China's main port in the 19th century for exporting tea.
