Oblong 4to. Pp. (iv), 193, one folding table; (ii), 197-314, one folding table. Slightly later marbled boards. Uncut copy. Some staining to first few leaves otherwise a clean and nice copy. First edition. Extensive list of words of different language families to show their relation. First the Germanic languages are listed: Islandic, English, Dutch, Flemish, Swedish and Danish; followed by the Slavic languages: Bohemian, Polish, Vendish, Syriac, Dalmatian, Croatian and; the Gallic languages: Latin, Greek, Italian, Spanish and French. From the library of the literary scholar and medievalist Joseph v. Lassberg. Klaproth (1783-1835), the famous German linguist, started his academic life at the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg. In 1815 he moved to Paris where he spent the rest of his life essentially working as a private scholar. He invented a new method to classify different languages and dialects.
