Paris: Galerie A. Vollard, 1914. Tall 4to, (2), 187, (3)pp, original etched frontispiece, with numerous illustrations including several plates photo-engraved by Louis Fort. Early 20th century full black morocco. Very good copy with the original wrappers preserved. ¶ First Edtion, one of 1000 numbered copies, with the original Cezanne etching, 'Tête de Femme' signed in the plate. The first and the most famous of the monographs which Vollard published to record information and anecdotes concerning the contemporary artists who were his friends. 'In my book on Cézanne' Vollard explained, 'I tried to write simply, colloquially, so to speak, echewing the slightest hint of art criticism' (Recollections). A most willing and dilligent collector of anecdotes, Vollard by this method has afforded unusual insight into Cézanne's personality. Roger Fry wrote on Vollard's work 'When the time comes for the complete appreciation of Cézanne, Vollard's book will be the most important document existing...' (Burlington Magazine 31, pp.51-61).
