Paris: Bibliothèque-Charpentier..., 1894. 2 parts, 18mo, (4), 296; 180-261pp. Quarter crimson morocco over marbled boards, 5 raised bands, gilt lettering at spine, marbled endpapers, orig. pale yellow printed wrappers preserved, inscrpt. at half-title, mild wear at extremities, light embrowning throughout, a very good copy, attractively bound. ¶ Second edition, inscribed by the author to Edouard Champion. A sceptical aesthete, impatient of discipline, Maurice Barrès (1862-1923) evinced his youthful desire for new sensations, exalting the Culte du Moi in a trilogy of 'ideologic' novels, Sous l'oeil des Barbares(1888), Un Homme Libre (1889), and the present work, Le Jardin de Bérénice(1891). The bound-in issue of 'L'Action Francaise' includes an article by Barrès. Talvart & Place 7B.
