A sceptical aesthete, impatient of discipline, Maurice Barrès (1862-1923) evinced his youthful desire for new sensations, exalting the Culte du Moi in a trilogy of 'ideologic' novels, Sous l'oeil des Barbares(1888), Un Homme Libre (1889), and the present work, Le Jardin de Bérénice(1891). The bound-in issue of 'L'Action Francaise' includes an article by Barrès. Talvart & Place 7B.
