Paris: Librairie Octave Doin, 1924. 8vo, 256, (1)pp, 38 plates. Orig. printed wrappers, several signatures starting, foot of spine chipped, light soiling to wrappers, very good. ¶ First Edition, with the presentation stamp of the author, of the great Russian-born physiologist's study on testicular grafting from monkeys to man. The study is based on 52 operations, of which one was a human transplant. Voronoff reports an 88% success rate from the point of view of the patient's physical and mental state after the operation and a 65% success rate when physical, mental, and sexual considerations are accounted for. ¦ Voronoff (1866-1951) was director of the Laboratoire de Chirurgie Expérimentale at the Collège de France, 'where he experimented with the transplantation of various organs of the endocrine system. The clinical results of his testicular grafting for sexual rejuvenation caused a sensation in the early 20-century, but soon faded because it was not successful in restoring sexual vigor. For substantial fees, he would transplant monkey testicles, the gonads of a young ape, or human glands. It is interesting to note that he died from syphilis contracted from one of his own monkey transplants' (Heirs of Hippocrates). Cf. Garrison-Morton 3797.
