Later half speckled calf over marbled boards, 5 raised bands, gilt lettering piece, light wear at extremities, cracked upper joint with cloth re-hinge, contemp. inscrpt. at ffep, 18th-c. owner inscript. at title, 3-inch tear along gutter margin engr. title, just encroaching on illus., mild to moderate even embrowning throughout, occasional spots and light stains, a good copy. ¶ Fourth edition of the author's principle work, first published in 1643. This popular history was augmented several times from the third edition of 1660 through seven more editions by 1733. The present edition is the first to contain an account of the Restoration by Edward Phillips, based on the lost papers of Sir Thomas Clarges, the brother-in-law of George Monck, Duke of Albemarle. Sir Richard Baker (1568-1645) was 68 years old when his first published work, an English translation of Cato's Latin distichs, appeared in 1636. He authored several religious works, including meditations upon the Psalms, prior to writing the Chronicle. With the vertical half-title (4F4r) reading: 'Baker's Chronicle' mounted, following the index. Wing B-505.
