His first erotic work, Verlaine published these six sonnets of adolescent lesbian sexuality pseudonymously in Brussels in 1868 to avoid French censorship. The final sonnet describes the suicide of Sappho, the ancient mistress of lesbians and patron of poetry. ¦ Swiss painter Gustave Buchet (1888-1963) pioneered the avant-garde in Geneva beginning in 1915, adopted futurism in 1917 and participated in the rise of dadaism in 1919. He soon emigrated to Paris where he became involved with the post-cubists and later in the purism of his compatriot, architect Le Corbusier.
