ΒΆ Brownell, educated as a lawyer decided upon literature instead shortly after graduating. At the onset of the Civil War, he became a volunteer and rose through the ranks to become Admiral Farragut's secretary. This copy bears the following inscription: "Gen. Lewis C. Richmond/with the author's compliments and regards."
