Worcester," regarding the work of the infamous English modern prophet John Lacy, of the Prophets Movement in the Americas, etc. London, 17 august 1721. Small folio. 3 full pages. Folding case, leather label. Horizontal fold frayed with minor loss of text, minor wear at edges, foxed, address page soiled. ¶ Gyles was a follower of John Lacy who joined the French Prophets having recently arrived in England. Lacy claimed to be able to raise the dead anf affect miraculous cures, all of this accomplished while in a trance state during which he would groan, hiccough, anf twitch violently, sometimes hurling his body across the room. This letter regards Lacy's great work among the Spirits and also mentions a group of followers in America, meeting at "Georges's Court"..."there is a male child of six months old in Jersey that speaks English, French, Latin & Greek." Lacy was committed to Brideswell in 1737, more as a nonconformist than a madman. See DNB Offered for US$ 800.00 by: James Cummins Bookseller - Book number: 6268 | |||
