Minor soiling, some light foxing and browning, else fine. ¶ Charles VI (1685Ð1740) succeeded his brother Joseph I as Holy Roman emperor in 1711; he was the last in the direct male Habsburg line. A decade earlier, Charles had been designated successor in Spain to the childless King Charles II, who then changed his wishes on his deathbed and left his throne to Philip of Anjou (Philip V). This provoked the War of the Spanish Succession, settled with the treaties of Utrecht (1713) and the Hague (1720).
