Les Amours des Dieux Payens [L'Arétin d'Augustin Carrache]. ... Tome Premier [Second].
A Lampsaque [Paris]: chez tous les Marchands de Nouveautés, 1802. (CURIOSA) 12mo. Orné de vingt figures. 20 engraved erotic plates. [4], 106, [4], 107 pp. Nineteenth-century three quarter blue morocco, some rubbing at extremities. One leaf cropped at corner margin (by binder?) with repair, no loss, scattered foxing, plates bright. Very good. Kearney, The Private Case 337; Pia, Les Livres de l'enfer, p. 44; Gay Lemmonyer I, 167, 260-261. ¶ The engravings show the erotic play of Graeco-Roman deities and mythological figures, such as Mars and Venus, Jupiter and Juno, satyrs and nymphs, as well as of mortals such as Antony and Cleopatra, Messalina, Ovid, and the daughter of Augustus ("Julie"). The text briefly describes the mythical figures depicted in a variety of postures. Gay-Lemmonyer attributes its authorship to Croze-Magnan. An attractive copy of a scarce book
