ΒΆ A superb, clear photograph of a gala, patriotic occasion, focusing on the dais at which sit former ambassador Joseph H. Choate, TR, Field Marshal Joffre (whose visit to America in 1917 probably prompted this event), William Howard Taft, and two New Yorkers: former Mayor John P. Mitchel (subsequently a Major in the army air service, he was killed in a training crash the following year), and president of Columbia University, Nicholas Murray Butler, along with other notables. They sit under a display of flags and the sign "To Make the World Safe for Democracy." An imposing photograph, by the noted firm of Underwood & Underwood, their logo appearing in the lower left corner. FINE AND HISTORIC
