Hauptmann (1862-1946) won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1912 in "special recognition of the distinction and the wide range of his creative work in the realm of dramatic poetry." Among his best known works are "Bahnwärter Thiel," "Promethidenloos," "Das Bunte Buch," and "Hanneles Himmelfahrt." He was a writer of poetry, drama, and fiction
