ΒΆ Sir Edward John Poynter (1836-1919), who painted scenes of Ancient Greece and Rome, was also a sculptor, etcher, academic draftsman, and mural decorator, and he rose to become the personification of the Victorian Art Establishment. In addition to his creative activities, he was the first Slade Professor of Art at London's University College, Director of Art Training Schools at South Kensington, a member of the Royal Academy--in 1896 he was elected its President, and was knighted--as well as being Director of the National Gallery.
