[Roxbury, Conn], 11 october 1957, 29 january 1975 and 1995. 4to. One page each. To Wesley Hartley, a long-time educator and teacher, formerly of the American Council on Education. Folded, else fine with two of the original envelopes. ¶ ¶The earliest letter notes "One ought to be educated, even if one is a writer, although I doubt that education would make a writer or prevent him from being one." The second letter Miller writes on education "All I can tell your students with any certainty, as far as education is concerned, is that what you don't know can hurt you and for any artist ignorance is not bliss but leads to his wasting a lot of time-a sound idea of the history of the development of culture and ideas of both a stimulus to creation and a framework for one's own efforts." The autograph note is added at the foot of Hartley's 1995 letter to Miller citing "Twentieth Century Authors" reading "This seems okay. Arthur Miller"
